Meet the Minister
- The Reverend Luther Starnes has been Gary Memorial UMC's minister since 1987. A graduate in history from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, with a degree in theology from Wesley Theological Seminary at American University in Washington D.C., Reverend Starnes has had a wide and varied career in ministry to the church and beyond.
After serving several full-time pastorates in the Baltimore/Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church, he was appointed by his Bishop to a high position in the Maryland Department of Human Resources, with responsibility for programs for children and families. During that time, he served several churches as well and hosted the top-rated 'Luther Starnes' talk radio program on WBAL in Baltimore.
While serving Gary Memorial as pastor, he ended his state career as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Human Resources on the cabinet of former Governor William Donald Schaefer, responsible for the entire social services programs within the State of Maryland.
Reverend Starnes and his wife Joyce make their home in Columbia and are the parents of four children and grandparents of nine. Reverend Starnes believes his role as a pastor is to share God's "good and happy" news with those who seek and trust in Him.
